�Morphotek�, Inc., a underling of Eisai Corporation of North America, announced that it has opened clinical sites in the European Union (EU) as part of the company's MORAb-009 Phase II study. The study is evaluating MORAb-009, a monoclonal antibody antibody to mesothelin, as a first-line treatment for patients with pancreatic cancer. The randomised, controlled, double-blinded trial will compare MORAb-009 plus gemcitabine with a placebo plus gemcitabine.
Morphotek has presently qualified 33 clinical sites in the United States and Canada to carry its Phase II study that started earlier this year. The company has opened four-spot clinical sites in Spain and received regulatory favorable reception in Spain, Belgium and Germany and 17 sites have been qualified in these countries. Regulatory approval for this study is also pending in Argentina. These approvals expand the ability to evaluate the efficacy of this compound in patients outside of the United States.

MORAb-009 is an IgG1 antibody that recognizes a cell surface glycoprotein called mesothelin, which is over-expressed on a number of epithelial-derived cancers. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) discovered the antigen from studies that evaluated a series of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) generated from splenocytes of mice immunized with human neoplasm cells. The antibody has been found to elicit anti-tumor personal effects via blockade of mesothelin to bandage to its ligand present on conterminous cells and immune-effector responses. Phase I studies of the antibody in patients found the molecule to be well tolerated at, or downstairs, the maximum tolerated dosage and clinical observations from those studies suggested antitumour responses in a number of patients.

Redmond O'Neal pleads guilty to drug charges

Redmond O'Neal, the son of Farrah Fawcett and Ryan O'Neal, has pleaded guilty to possessing heroin and methamphetamine.
The 23-year-old O'Neal pleaded guilty Thursday in a Malibu court to the two felony counts and a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of drugs. As part of a plea deal, a second DUI charge was dismissed.
He was placed on three years' probation on the misdemeanor charge and fined about $1,700.
The district attorney's office says O'Neal also was ordered to remain in drug treatment until a hearing next month to determine if he can enter a drug-diversion program on the felony charges.
O'Neal was arrested January 26th after he was stopped for speeding on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.

Lohan, Murphy top the Razzie nominees
Lindsay Lohan and Eddie Murphy have each scored multiple nominations for this year's Razzie Awards.
Celebrating Hollywood's worst in Film, the Razzie nominees were announced ahead of the Oscar nominees.
Lindsay Lohan's thriller, 'I know Who Killed Me', in which she plays two characters who may or may not be the same person, received nine Razzie nominations, amongst them Worst Picture of 2007.
For her Worst Actress nomination, Lohan polled more heavily than any star since Sofia Coppola in 'The Godfather Part III,' according to Razzie founder, John Wilson.
2007 may have been the year Eddie Murphy won an Academy Award nomination for his role in 'Dreamgirls', but that didn't prevent his film 'Norbit' from receiving eight nominations.
Besides a nod for Worst Picture, five of those went to Murphy alone, more than any one person has ever received in a single year.
"We decided that each of his characters was so offensive that he deserved individual nominations," said John Wilson.
Adam Sandler ('I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry') and Cuba Gooding Jr ('Daddy Day Camp', 'Norbit') joined Murphy in the Worst Actor category, along with Nicolas Cage ('Ghost Rider')and Jim Carrey ('The Number 23').
The 'winners' of the 28th Razzies will be announced on 23 February, a day before the Oscars.
